Beau does love his travel, when he can get it, and one of his favorite spots to get away when he finds himself leaning a little too hard into the same routine over and over is the enormous tangle of water routes in Hoenn's southeastern region.

"Brah, this one's gonna be SICK, keep up!" he hollers, adjusting his stance as he readies for the next wave in a particularly choppy section of the route. His Gyarados-themed surfboard slices through the water - if not quite as sleekly as the real thing - in a darn close approximation thereof, clear that he's engaged in this particular pastime for several years.

Balanced on the rear of the board behind him is Nemo, his Marshtomp, who adopts a determined expression and crouches down in imitation of his trainer, offering an excited "Stomp!"

No sooner have the pair braced themselves than a large swell makes its way down the channel towards them. Beau maneauvers the board expertly, cutting across the surface of the water as it rises underneath him and slicing in a perfect arc down its opposite side as the swell slowly ebbs, though not without the added bonus of kicking up a salty spray of water behind his board that rains down along one side of a nearby sandbar - and whomever might be currently occupying it.

i'll chase the light of that distant star

"Ah!" Talia exclaimed, the sea spray falling over her like a sparkling curtain of mist. She laughed from atop her Dragonair, grinning widely, as she yelled back, "Two can play that game!"

Talia didn't know the man surfing on the waves in the slightest, but she felt that she'd more than earned a little friendly competition. With a low whistle, she directed Lyra to dive down closer to the water, skimming the surface as she splashed Beau Fontaine and his Marshtomp in kind.

"Now we're even," she said, pleased at the sight of her now-drenched companion as she pulled by his side. "My name is Talia. Who are you?"

Beau laughs as the Milotic responds in kind, shielding his eyes with one hand as the water splashes down on him. Nemo, for his part, utters a pleased little "Stomp!", clapping his hands as the refreshing spray splashes him. The trainer lifts a hand to offer an apologetic wave to Talia, accompanied by a charming, if rueful, grin. "I'm Beau!" he greets, as though that explains quite everything there is to explain.

He cuts the surfboard along the surface of the water toward shore, weaving to and fro before he dismounts with a practiced motion, landing on the sandbar with his Marshtomp just behind him. "Sorry about that," he says, "I'm not used to seeing anybody out at this spot, or I'd have been more careful! What brings you out?" He glances down to Nemo as though looking for reassurance, but finds the Marshtomp being tugged backwards into the water by a wayward Dewpider.

"Whoa, whoa little brah! A Rock Slide will take care of that bug bugging you!" Nemo shakes free of his assailant and turns around with a determined little growl, stomping on the edge of the sandbar and incongruously sending a shower of small rocks into the air that crash down on the unfortunate Dewpider, sending it stumbling drunkenly around on the shoreline.

Not one to look a gift pokemon in the mouth, Beau tosses a pokeball toward the Dewpider with a whoop. "Great job, brah, just like that!"

"Beau," she repeated. It had a nice ring to it. "Then it's decided. We're now officially friends."

At the Dewpider's unexpected antics, Talia let out a bright laugh, her eyes then flitting to the Mothim that had appeared just out of the corner of her eye. "Another challenger approaches," she said with a devious grin, directing her Dragonair to shift course. "I'll take care of this one."

An AQUA TAIL skillfully swept through the water, drenching the poor Mothim so that it stumbled in mid-air. Furrowing her brow in concentration, Talia tossed a Pokeball towards the indignant creature, watching as it vanished inside the sphere with a flash of light.

"It's nice seeing people out here," she agreed, wiping stray water droplets from her face with her heavy sleeves. "Never tried surfing on the water, though! Lyra and I normally just fly overhead."

"Oh, sweet!" the man effuses. "The more friends the better, am I right?"

His attention turns to the Mothim as Talia sends her Milotic after it, and despite his attempt at maintaining a serious demeanor while watching the aquatic pokemon all but splash the moth out of the air, he cannot quite resist giving a sharp, brief fistpump as the woman captures the pokemon herself. Nice.

"Oh, yeah, I get it," he continues, "Flying is quicker and I guess scenic in its own way, if you're into it, but there's something about being able to feel the water underneath you, and really working together with it to make it where you wanna go, y'know? It's like the pulse of the planet," he grins wistfully, planting his surfboard upright in the sand as he stretches.

The rare moment of poignancy from the young man is interrupted by a sound not unlike a raspberry - Nemo has caught the attention of a passing Tentacool, who has squirted water into the Marshtomp's face. Nemo, aggrieved, responds in kind with a weak stream of water of his own, causing the Tentacool to flip a tentacle up in agitation before sinking underwater once more.

Talia nodded vigorously in answer to Beau Fontaine's thoughts about surfing, the passion in his words kindling her own. "I understand, I think," she said, her voice gaining a quickening excitement as she continued, "Sometimes when I am flying, it is like there is nothing else in all the world except myself, Lyra, and the wind. I imagine surfing is like that for you in a way, no?"

And perhaps it was that skyward interest that drew her attention to the Noibat overheard, fluttering about the intrigued Dragonair as she sniffed him. The testy bat-like Pokemon bared SUPER FANGS at her, and Lyra let out a low growl in answer, a resounding DRAGON PULSE punishing the Noibat for his insolence.

"Have some manners," Talia said with a little tut-tut of disapproval, throwing a Pokeball to the Pokemon with a shake of her head.

"Yeah, that's totally it!" Beau enthuses, nodding at Talia. "Just Zenning out, you get it!"

His next sagacious observation is pre-empted by an Arrokuda smacking him in the back of the head and sending him stumbling forward. "What the fish?!" he exclaims, rubbing his head in irritation and turning around to face his aggressor: an oversized Cramorant, squawking in a parody of laughter.

Beau's normally bright features darken as his eyes narrow in challenge. "Nemo, get 'er!" The Marshtomp responds enthusiastically, causing a Rock Slide that the puffed-up bird can't dodge in time, knocking it sprawling into the shallows where it meets the pokéball that Beau hurls at it with perhaps a bit more force than is necessary.

"Zenning out," Talia repeated, as if testing the phrase, and deciding she liked it.

She giggled at the sight of Beau Fontaine and the Cramorant, her eyes sparkling with laughter, before a gasp left her own lips as her attention was drawn to a sandy dune in the centre of the water.

"A Gastrodon!" she breathed with delight as the curiously slug-like Pokemon came into view. "Oh, Lyra, would you?"

The Dragonair obliged with a DRAGON PULSE, evading the mud slung from the Gastrodon with ease.
